Solar Team Eindhoven Stella Juva development
Overview
Students from Solar Team Eindhoven at the Eindhoven University of Technology have developed Stella Juva, described as the world’s first solar-powered ambulance. Designed to function as an autonomous mobile clinic, the vehicle aims to provide medical care to populations in remote, off-grid regions lacking reliable electricity or fuel.
The 1,350-kg vehicle features a carbon fiber composite chassis and utilizes high-efficiency AIKO ‘All Back Contact’ photovoltaic modules, which maximize sunlight capture by moving electrical contacts to the rear of the cells. It is equipped with a 50 kWh lithium battery to support nighttime operations and sensitive medical equipment. To ensure reliability, the power supply for the medical cabin is isolated from the propulsion system, ensuring energy remains available for life-saving tools even if propulsion power is depleted.
The interior functions as a mobile emergency room, equipped with X-ray machines, ultrasound for prenatal care, malaria rapid tests, and an automated external defibrillator (AED). The project is scheduled for field testing in Kenya in collaboration with the non-profit Amref Health Africa to evaluate performance in rugged, real-world environments. The initiative addresses a critical global gap, noting that according to the World Health Organization, approximately 1 billion people live in areas with insecure or non-existent electrical power for medical facilities.
