Stella Lefty faces scrutiny over songwriting credits on debut album
Singer-songwriter Stella Lefty is facing scrutiny regarding her debut album, ‘Long Way Home’, following reports that the track ‘Summer You Were Mine’ bears strong resemblances to The Chicks’ 1998 hit ‘There’s Your Trouble’.
While the song recreates recognizable melodic and lyrical elements of the original rather than using a direct audio sample, the songwriters of the original track, Tia Sillers and Mark Selby, were initially missing from the digital credits. Atlantic Records attributed this to a platform error, stating that Lefty’s team had secured clearance from Sony Publishing in June and that internal documents had correctly listed the original writers prior to the August 21 release. The credits have since been updated.
Critical reception of the album has been mixed. While Lefty has seen significant commercial momentum with singles like ‘Boston’, some critics have labeled the work as derivative, noting melodic similarities to other contemporary artists.
