Stellantis and CATL to build housing for 1,700 Chinese workers in Spain

Stellantis and CATL are preparing a temporary residential complex in Figueruelas, Spain, to accommodate up to 1,700 workers arriving from China. This move supports the development of a massive battery gigafactory under the joint venture Contemporary Star Energy.

The scale of Chinese specialist involvement is increasing to assist with equipment installation, production startup, and technology transfer. While approximately 170 Chinese specialists are currently on-site, the number is expected to peak at 1,700 during intensive construction phases. Because local towns lack sufficient housing, the new modular complex will include essential infrastructure such as a canteen and a medical point to avoid overstraining local public services.

The €4.1 billion investment aims to produce lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, with a target annual capacity of 50 GWh. The facility is intended to be a critical component of Stellantis's European supply chain for affordable electric vehicles.
