Stellantis Betim Plant Celebrates 50 Years as Brazil’s Automotive Hub

The Stellantis automotive complex in Betim, Minas Gerais, marked its 50th anniversary. Since its inauguration in 1976, the plant has produced more than 18 million vehicles and exported over 4 million units to roughly 40 countries, making it one of the largest and most complete automotive centers in South America.

The milestone highlighted the plant’s historic role in launching the Fiat 147, Brazil’s first locally produced Fiat model. The 147 introduced a transverse‑engine layout, radial tyres and other technical innovations, prompting a shift in the national market and cementing Betim as a key industrial hub beyond the traditional Rio‑São Paulo axis. As one commentator noted, “O 147 não foi apenas um carro; ele foi a ‘escola’ de modernidade da indústria brasileira.”

Today the facility employs thousands, sustains an extensive supplier network and is slated for a R$ 14 billion investment programme through 2030, reinforcing its strategic importance for Stellantis and the Brazilian automotive sector.
