Stellantis CEO apologizes for PureTech engine and Takata airbag issues

Antonio Filosa, CEO of Stellantis, issued a public apology during the Paris Motor Show for recurring durability issues with the 1.2-liter PureTech engine family and complications regarding Takata airbag recalls. The PureTech engines, used in various Peugeot, Citroën, and Opel models, feature a timing belt designed to operate in engine oil. However, premature degradation of the belt has caused debris to clog oil pumps and lubrication systems, leading to severe engine damage.

To address these concerns in Europe, Stellantis has extended warranties for affected vehicles to ten years or 175,000 kilometers and established a platform to reimburse customers for repairs conducted through authorized networks. The company has also transitioned to a metal timing chain in newer engine generations to replace the problematic belt system.

Filosa stated that the company has worked to improve vehicle quality by approximately 30 percent since the beginning of the year. Stellantis aims to rank among the top 25 percent of automotive manufacturers regarding quality by 2028.
