Stellantis 1.2 PureTech engine reliability issues

Overview

The Stellantis 1.2-liter PureTech engine, particularly the first and second generations produced between 2013 and 2022, is facing significant reliability concerns due to its oil-immersed timing belt design. Mechanics report that belt degradation can cause particles to enter the lubrication system, leading to clogged oil pump strainers, loss of oil pressure, and catastrophic engine failure. In Spain alone, estimates suggest between 700,000 and 750,000 vehicles may be affected. While a newer version featuring a timing chain was introduced in 2023, several popular models—including the Jeep Avenger, Opel Corsa, Opel Mokka, and Peugeot 208—continue to use the older belt-driven version. Consumers are specifically advised to monitor ‘Turbo 100 hp’ and ‘Turbo 130 hp’ variants. In response to the ongoing criticism, Stellantis CEO Antonio Filosa has issued a formal apology to customers affected by the engine failures. Speaking at the Paris Motor Show, Filosa addressed the systemic failures caused by the oil-bathed timing belt technology, a legacy of the former PSA Group. To address these quality concerns, Filosa announced the establishment of approximately one hundred ‘quality war rooms’ across Europe and North America. To further support affected owners, Stellantis is extending warranties for impacted vehicles to ten years or 175,000 km and has established a reimbursement platform for customers who paid for repairs through official networks. Long-term, the manufacturer is transitioning from the PureTech engines to the Fiat-developed Firefly engine family, which utilizes a more durable timing chain. Filosa expanded his public apologies to include complications involving Takata airbag recalls, noting that these issues have damaged consumer trust in brands such as Peugeot, Citroën, and Opel.
