Stellantis extends summer shutdown at Mirafiori plant, heightening Fiat 500 production worries

The Mirafiori assembly line in Turin will be idle for a total of four weeks this summer – the last week of July and three weeks in August – longer than the two‑week pause originally scheduled. Stellantis said the added week is needed because of uneven availability of key components such as engines, front‑ends and sensors for the Fiat 500, including its hybrid version, and also cited weaker than expected demand.

The FIOM union warned that the extended halt coincides with the expiry of about 40 % of temporary contracts for roughly 500 workers hired in January, raising the risk that those contracts will not be renewed and could lead to layoffs or reduced hours. The union also flagged broader doubts about Stellantis’s plan to reach 100 000 Fiat 500 units a year by 2026, noting that only about 15 000 were produced in the first quarter and that the CEO has said a new 500 model will not launch before 2030.
