Stellantis models still use 1.2 PureTech belt engine as Peugeot 208 EV launches with Chinese motor

In 2026, Stellantis continues to sell certain models equipped with the older 1.2 PureTech engine that features a belt‑driven camshaft immersed in oil. The engine, first introduced in 2012 on the Peugeot 208, has been linked to premature belt wear and recall campaigns, prompting a redesign to a chain‑driven EB2 Gen 3 in 2023. Nevertheless, specific market versions of the Jeep Avenger, Opel Corsa, Opel Mokka and the Peugeot 208 may still receive the legacy 1.2 PureTech under the new “1.2 Turbo” or “1.2 Essence” naming.

Peugeot’s next‑generation 208, planned as a fully electric model for 2027, will initially be powered by a motor supplied by Chinese equipment maker Jing‑Jin Electric (JJE). The interim solution bridges the gap until Stellantis‑Nidec joint‑venture Emotors can deliver its own European‑designed motor in 2028, which will be assembled in Hungary with French rotor and stator components. The temporary Chinese motor could affect eligibility for certain subsidies that consider component provenance.
