Stem cell therapy advances in regenerative medicine

Stem cell therapy is a central pillar of regenerative medicine, offering potential for treating chronic diseases through the unique ability of cells to differentiate into various types. While blood stem cell transplantation is an established standard for conditions like leukemia, other applications remain in various stages of research and development.

In the context of liver cirrhosis, mesenchymal stem cell therapy shows promise for restoring liver function, slowing fibrosis, and improving patient quality of life. These cells can promote hepatocyte proliferation and modulate the immune system by secreting growth factors such as HGF, VEGF, EGF, and IGF-1. This process can activate signaling pathways that reduce cell death and improve metabolism.

However, challenges remain in the field. The actual reconstruction of completely destroyed tissue is inconsistent in practice, and cell cultivation is highly sensitive to laboratory variations. Additionally, there are risks associated with unregulated medical tourism, where clinics abroad may offer unproven or uncontrolled treatments.
