Stem cell therapy research for liver cirrhosis
Overview
Stem cell therapy is being explored as a method for regenerative medicine, particularly for treating chronic conditions like liver cirrhosis. Research indicates that mesenchymal stem cells may help restore liver function and slow fibrosis by promoting cell proliferation and modulating the immune system. However, the field faces challenges regarding inconsistent tissue reconstruction, laboratory sensitivity, and risks from unregulated medical tourism.
Recent developments show specific advancements in clinical and engineering approaches. In Vietnam, researchers are establishing a multi-center protocol to test umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells for treating cirrhosis caused by Hepatitis B. Concurrently, engineers in the United States are developing injectable “miniature livers” using hepatocytes, fibroblast cells, and hydrogel microbeads. In animal studies, these hydrogel scaffolds allowed injected cells to remain functional and integrate with the circulatory system for eight weeks.
