STMicroelectronics and NUS launch edge AI research lab

STMicroelectronics and the National University of Singapore (NUS) have established the ‘ST-NUS HELIX Corporate Lab,’ a four-year strategic research initiative focused on advancing edge Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies.

Supported by the Singapore government’s Research, Innovation and Enterprise 2025 (RIE2025) plan, the lab will operate under the NUS College of Design and Engineering with participation from the School of Computing. The project, named HELIX (Hardware for Embodied Low-power Intelligent Xcceleration), aims to enable new generative and embodied AI applications in edge environments.

Research areas will include AI algorithms, accelerator architectures, low-power memory systems, circuit design, silicon technology, and application development. A primary focus is embodied AI, which integrates intelligence into physical forms such as robots, humanoids, and drones through multi-modal sensing and real-time actuation.

By combining NUS’s academic expertise with STMicroelectronics’ semiconductor manufacturing and industry experience, the partnership seeks to develop scalable semiconductor solutions that reduce energy consumption by minimizing off-chip data movement. The initiative also aims to cultivate talent to support Singapore’s semiconductor and AI ecosystems.
