National University of Singapore AI integration

Overview

The National University of Singapore (NUS) has initiated a comprehensive integration of artificial intelligence into its academic and research frameworks. The university established a strategic partnership with OpenAI to provide students, faculty, and staff with access to ChatGPT Edu and Codex, implementing security measures to prevent institutional data from being used for model training.

To prepare students for an AI-driven economy, NUS introduced mandatory AI competency requirements for undergraduates, including specific modules on applied generative AI. Following these educational initiatives, the university expanded its technological footprint by launching AI Sense Maker (ASM), a web-based conversational platform powered by OpenAI’s Large Language Models to assist with semantic search and knowledge mapping.

Expanding its research capabilities, NUS partnered with STMicroelectronics to establish the ST–NUS HELIX Corporate Lab. Supported by the Singapore government’s Research, Innovation and Enterprise 2025 (RIE2025) plan, this four-year strategic initiative operates under the NUS College of Design and Engineering and the School of Computing. The project, named HELIX (Hardware for Embodied Low-power Intelligent Xcceleration), focuses on advancing edge AI technologies, including semiconductor design, accelerator architectures, and low-power memory systems. A primary research objective is the development of embodied AI, which integrates intelligence into physical forms such as robots, humanoids, and drones through multi-modal sensing and real-time actuation. The partnership aims to develop scalable semiconductor solutions that reduce energy consumption while cultivating talent for Singapore’s semiconductor and AI ecosystems.
