Stork rescue efforts intensify in the Czech Republic

Young storks in the Czech Republic are facing significant survival challenges as they attempt their first flights. The National Network of Rescue Stations, coordinated by the Czech Union for Nature Conservation (ČSOP), reported receiving 36 storks for care in July and early August. Many young birds struggle with human-altered landscapes, facing risks such as collisions with buildings, electric power lines, and becoming trapped in melting asphalt.

Experts note that the lack of flight experience and the inability to maneuver quickly in built-up areas make this a critical period. Furthermore, the disappearance of wetlands and traditional agricultural landscapes forces birds to travel further for food, increasing their exposure to hazards. The rescue process is both logistically and financially demanding, often requiring surgical interventions and long-term rehabilitation in large aviaries.

In a successful conservation outcome, the Pavlov Rescue Station recently released 12 young storks that were rescued from nests in various locations, including Nová Ves u Chotěboře and Třebíč. These birds, some of whom were monitored via transmitters, have already been tracked migrating toward Austria and Hungary. The station noted that extreme heat has also increased the number of other birds, such as swifts and swallows, requiring emergency care due to overheating in urban nests.
