Stork population trends in the Czech Republic

Overview

Stork populations in the Czech Republic have shown signs of successful breeding in areas such as České Budějovice and Žehušice. In Haklových Dvorech, a stork pair produced two fledglings that were ringed by experts, following a period of growth in local populations since 2021.

However, young storks are facing significant survival challenges during their first flights. The National Network of Rescue Stations, coordinated by the Czech Union for Nature Conservation (ČSOP), reported receiving 36 storks for care in July and early August. Hazards include collisions with buildings and power lines, as well as risks from human-altered landscapes and the disappearance of wetlands.

Despite these challenges, conservation efforts have seen success; the Pavlov Rescue Station recently released 12 young storks that were tracked migrating toward Austria and Hungary.
