Storm Maysak heads toward Hainan and Vietnam’s Hai Phong, prompting evacuations and radar tracking

Tropical Storm Maysak is forecast to make landfall on China’s Hainan Island before moving into the eastern Gulf of Tonkin and toward Vietnam’s Quang Ninh and Hai Phong coast. The storm is expected to produce sustained winds of 74 kph with gusts up to 102 kph, storm surges of 0.2‑0.3 m, waves up to five metres and 100‑200 mm of rain, with isolated areas possibly exceeding 350 mm. Authorities warned that fishing vessels, floating fish farms, aquaculture facilities and coastal infrastructure are at high risk of capsizing, damage and flooding.

In Hai Phong, officials have activated a coastal radar system on Bach Long Vi to monitor and guide fishing vessels to safety. Over 1,600 vessels carrying more than 4,400 crew members have been directed to sheltered anchorage, and all 155 floating aquaculture facilities have been secured. Thousands of police, military and civil‑defence personnel, along with hundreds of vehicles, have been deployed, maritime activities have been suspended, and flood‑control measures are being inspected. No vessels have been reported lost and no casualties have been confirmed as the storm approaches.
