Storm surges cause significant sand loss on German North Sea islands

Recent storm surges in the North Sea have caused substantial erosion on several East Frisian islands, most notably Wangerooge and Norderney. On Wangerooge, authorities report a massive hole has formed in the main bathing beach, with an estimated 40,000 cubic meters of sand washed away.

On Norderney, the Weiße Düne has seen a retreat of more than six meters, leaving meter-high edges. Due to the extent of the damage and the costs associated with replenishment, officials suggest that regular bathing operations at this specific section may be abandoned for the upcoming season.

While islands such as Borkum, Juist, Langeoog, and Spiekeroog also experienced sand loss in front of protective dunes, the Lower Saxony State Agency for Water Management, Coastal Defense and Nature Conservation (NLWKN) stated that the protective function of the dunes remains fully intact and there is no immediate danger to the coast.
