North Sea weather impacts German East Frisian Islands

Overview

In mid October, strong easterly winds in the North Sea caused low water levels, which disrupted ferry services to several East Frisian Islands, including Juist, Wangerooge, and Spiekeroog. These conditions led to cancellations and delays for both passenger and freight transport between various coastal points and the islands.

By late October, the situation evolved from low water levels to storm surges. These surges caused significant coastal erosion, particularly on Wangerooge, where an estimated 40,000 cubic meters of sand were washed away from the main beach. On Norderney, the Weiße Düne retreated by more than six meters. While islands such as Borkum, Juist, Langeoog, and Spiekeroog also experienced sand loss, the Lower Saxony State Agency for Water Management, Coastal Defense and Nature Conservation stated that the protective function of the dunes remains intact and there is no immediate danger to the coast.
