Southern France floods kill at least four people

Severe storms and torrential rainfall have caused devastating flooding across southeastern France, resulting in at least four deaths and one person reported missing. In the Bouches-du-Rhône department, authorities confirmed the deaths of two women, aged 86 and 26, who were found drowned in a basement in Lançon-Provence. A 75-year-old man also died in Saint-Mitre-les-Remparts after being swept away by floodwaters.

In Haute-Corse, a man was found dead after his vehicle was carried away by the Fium’orbu river in Ghisonaccia. Rescue teams are also searching for a missing person in the Var department near Roquebrune-sur-Argens.

The extreme weather has caused widespread disruption, including blocked roads, suspended railway lines, and significant damage to infrastructure. Thousands of households have been left without electricity, and hundreds of residents in towns such as Arles and Saint-Martin-de-Crau have been evacuated to emergency shelters. Local authorities have described the water levels as reaching “unprecedented” heights.
