Flooding in Southern France and Corsica

Overview

Severe storms and torrential rainfall have caused devastating flash floods across southeastern France and Corsica. The extreme weather resulted in at least four confirmed deaths, including individuals swept away by floodwaters or found drowned in flooded buildings.

In Corsica, Solenzara recorded unprecedented rainfall, reaching 196 liters per square meter in a single hour and a six-hour total of 538.5 liters per square meter. These conditions triggered large-scale rescue operations, including the evacuation of residents from a nursing home and areas near Ghisonaccia.

Infrastructure damage has been widespread, with reports of destroyed bridges, blocked roads, and suspended railway lines. Approximately 8,500 households lost electricity, and hundreds of residents were moved to emergency shelters. The agricultural sector has also faced significant concerns following the impact of these floods after a previous period of drought.
