Strait of Hormuz tensions rise amid mine strike claims
Tensions have escalated in the Strait of Hormuz following conflicting reports regarding a maritime incident. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed that a supertanker, which it alleged was violating regulations by using an illegal southern route, struck two naval mines, caught fire, and became immobilized.
U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) has denied these claims, stating that no vessel struck mines in the waterway. CENTCOM accused the IRGC of using disinformation to intimidate commercial shipping. This dispute follows reported U.S. strikes on two rocket launchers on Iran’s Larak Island. In response, Iran reportedly launched attacks against U.S. military bases in Jordan and the United Arab Emirates.
Separately, satellite imagery analysis suggests the United States may have conducted covert dredging operations to establish a new shipping corridor on the Omani side of the Strait of Hormuz. This waterway, approximately 1,600 feet wide, would allow vessels to navigate outside the direct line of sight of Iranian forces.
