Philippines probes maritime safety after deadly Strait of Hormuz tanker attack
The Philippine Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) has launched an investigation into the deployment of Filipino crew members following a deadly attack on the Saudi-flagged crude oil tanker Sidr in the Strait of Hormuz on August 31. The strike, which Saudi Arabia attributed to Iran, resulted in the deaths of two Filipino seafarers.
Fourteen survivors from the Sidr arrived in Manila on September 8. DMW Secretary Hans Leo J. Cacdac stated the agency is reviewing whether the shipowner and manning agency, Jebsen PTC, complied with safety regulations. The inquiry will focus on whether the crew was provided safe passage, if risk assessments were filed, and if seafarers were permitted to exercise their right to refuse voyages into high-risk or warlike zones.
In a related development, ten Filipino seafarers aboard the Liberian-flagged Dema M were also repatriated after exercising their right to refuse transit through the Strait of Hormuz due to heightened security risks. The DMW continues to monitor several other vessels carrying Filipino crew in the Black Sea and the Middle East to ensure their safety.
