Strait of Hormuz oil spill contaminates Iranian coastline
A massive oil spill is affecting the Strait of Hormuz near Qeshm Island, Iran. While official Iranian reports initially cited contamination of 3.2 hectares of coastline and 9 hectares of water, satellite imagery analyzed by Greenpeace suggests a much larger scale. The imagery identifies a primary oil slick covering approximately 500 square kilometers, alongside two additional slicks measuring 100 and 20 square kilometers.
The pollution has reached the Shib-Deraz beach on Qeshm Island, impacting critical ecosystems including mangrove forests, significant fishing grounds, and sea turtle nesting sites. Iranian authorities have reportedly begun containment and cleanup efforts.
The environmental crisis is compounded by regional maritime instability. Separately, the tanker Caroline Bezengi, which is part of Russia's shadow fleet and subject to EU sanctions, has run aground off the coast of Oman.
