Strait of Hormuz tanker attack injures 12 crew members

The Panama-flagged tanker MT On Peace was struck by a projectile of unknown origin in international waters in the Strait of Hormuz on October 5. The vessel was transiting from Bahrain to the United Arab Emirates when the impact caused an onboard fire. Twelve crew members were injured in the attack, and the Royal Air Force of Oman evacuated ten of them for medical treatment.

The Panama Maritime Authority confirmed that all crew members have been identified and that no marine pollution or environmental damage resulted from the incident. The vessel is currently being towed to the port of Shinas, Oman, for a technical evaluation of its structural damage.

This incident occurs amid heightened maritime tensions in the region. Shipping data from Kpler indicates that vessel traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has reached a two-month low, with crude oil transit falling 27% from its recent wartime peak to approximately 10.1 million barrels per day. Maritime security sources report that the number of attacks on tankers in the waterway reached its highest weekly frequency since the start of the conflict between the United States, Israel, and Iran.
