Strait of Hormuz: Iran and Oman advance talks on maritime reopening
Diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions in the Persian Gulf have gained momentum, with signs of a potential agreement between the United States and Iran regarding the Strait of Hormuz. Pakistan's Defense Minister, Khawaja Asif, indicated that signals from recent days suggest a move toward a peace pact or agreement.
Qatar has reported that negotiations between Oman and Iran concerning the reopening of the waterway have reached an advanced technical stage. These discussions include establishing specific shipping routes: a northern route through Iranian waters for vessels entering the Gulf, and a southern route through Omani waters for departing ships.
Despite the optimism, significant hurdles remain. Iran has linked the reopening to the end of US sanctions and the unfreezing of its assets, which are valued between 6 billion and 12 billion dollars. Conversely, US President Donald Trump has demanded that Iran provide compensation for casualties resulting from recent conflicts. While Qatar noted that compensation is not currently a central part of the Oman-Iran technical talks, the issue remains a major point of contention in broader US-Iran relations.
The prospect of a resolution has already impacted global markets, with Brent crude oil prices dropping following the announcements.
