Strait of Hormuz sees 68 maritime incidents amid regional conflict

The Strait of Hormuz has become a central flashpoint in the ongoing conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran. According to data from the International Maritime Organization (IMO), there have been 68 maritime incidents recorded over a six-month period in the Persian Gulf, the Gulf of Oman, and the Arabian Sea.

These incidents occur at an average rate of one every 2.5 days. The human toll includes at least 20 deaths, 35 injuries, and one person reported missing. The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) has classified 47 of these incidents specifically as “attacks.”

The targeted vessels include approximately 50% oil tankers, 20% container ships, and 15% bulk carriers. Most affected vessels were flying flags from Liberia, Panama, or the Marshall Islands, while four incidents specifically targeted ships flying Iranian flags.
