Strait of Hormuz sees record maritime attacks in October

The Strait of Hormuz experienced a significant surge in maritime attacks during October 2026, marking the highest number of incidents recorded in a single month. According to data from the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, 28 confirmed attacks occurred in the strait and surrounding waterways during October, contributing to a total of 113 attacks since the start of the US-Israeli war on Iran on February 28.

Reports indicate that over 30 Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCCs) have sustained damage, including 11 vessels in October alone. This represents approximately 3.5% of the global VLCC fleet. The escalation is linked to rising shipping rates, which have exceeded $1 million per day, and regional production discounts.

Data from the International Maritime Organization (IMO) corroborates these trends, noting 120 total incidents in the Strait of Hormuz and the broader Middle East region since the conflict began. Analysts suggest the increased activity aims to pressure energy markets and disrupt shipping recovery.
