Strait of Hormuz traffic drops as US-Iran tensions escalate
Tensions between the United States and Iran have escalated as maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has plummeted. On Monday, only six vessels passed through the waterway, a sharp decline from the pre-conflict average of 130 to 140 vessels and significantly lower than the recent ten-day average of approximately 11 vessels.
US President Donald Trump declared the Strait mine-free and navigable, asserting that the US maintains 100 percent control over the area. He has demanded compensation from Tehran for casualties and damages resulting from wars, attacks, and protests.
In response, Iran has outlined several conditions for the full reopening of the waterway. These include an end to US military threats and the provision of guarantees against future aggression, the cessation of military actions against allies in Lebanon, Palestine, Yemen, and Iraq, the removal of naval blockades, and the withdrawal of US forces from the region. Iran also demands financial compensation for damages incurred during recent conflicts.
