Strait of Hormuz maritime attacks escalate amid rising regional tensions

Maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz has deteriorated significantly, with a surge in attacks on commercial vessels. The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported 12 attacks in a single week ending October 16, noting that one vessel sank, two were disabled, and three sustained damage or had unconfirmed outcomes. UKMTO warned that the true number of incidents may be higher as many shipowners refuse to report attacks.

Reports indicate that commercial shipping transits through the strait have dropped to approximately 70 percent below pre-war levels. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has urged ships to avoid the region, noting that over 110 vessels have been hit since the US-Israeli conflict with Iran began in late February, resulting in at least 24 confirmed deaths among seafarers.

In a recent escalation, Iran's Revolutionary Guards claimed that two oil tankers caught fire after striking naval mines while attempting to use unauthorized routes. Other reported incidents include a tanker being hit by a rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) from a small boat and another vessel being struck by an unidentified projectile. These disruptions continue to impact global energy prices and maritime insurance costs.
