Strait of Hormuz: Two oil tankers catch fire after hitting naval mines

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) reported that two oil tankers caught fire after striking naval mines in the Strait of Hormuz. According to the IRGC, the vessels were carrying approximately two million barrels of crude oil each and were attempting to navigate through unauthorized routes in the waterway.

The IRGC alleged that the tankers had deactivated their GPS, radar, and positioning systems to perform “deceptive maneuvers,” claiming one vessel attempted to cross with support from the US military. While the IRGC stated the explosions caused massive fires and left one vessel immobilized, these claims have not been independently verified.

These incidents occur amid escalating maritime tensions following the start of the US-Israeli war with Iran in late February. Maritime monitoring agencies, including the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), have noted a significant increase in attacks. Recent data indicates that six vessels were attacked in or near the Strait of Hormuz on a single Sunday, marking a record high for daily attacks since the conflict began. Additionally, maritime traffic through the strait remains significantly below pre-conflict levels.
