Strait of Hormuz tanker attack occurs amid Iran-US mediation talks

An oil tanker was disabled after being hit by an unknown projectile off the coast of Oman in the Strait of Hormuz. According to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Organization, the strike hit the ship’s engine on Monday night. While all crew members are reported safe and no immediate environmental impact was noted, the incident highlights the ongoing dangers in the waterway, which is currently under firm Iranian control following military actions by the U.S. and Israel.

In Tehran, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian met with Pakistan’s Army Chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, to discuss regional stability. Pezeshkian called on the United States to shift its approach, stating that reliance on “coercion and bullying” complicates diplomatic processes. He emphasized the need for Washington to respect Iran’s legitimate rights and international regulations.

Pakistan has been acting as a mediator to facilitate peace between the U.S. and Iran. The discussions follow a June 18 Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) intended to lead to negotiations, though the future of these talks is uncertain due to recent escalations. Pakistani officials described the high-level talks in Tehran as “highly positive.”
