Middle East tensions drive oil volatility and US sanctions on Iran's shadow fleet

Global energy markets are experiencing significant volatility due to escalating tensions in the Middle East. Oil prices, including Brent crude, have seen sharp fluctuations, at times surging over 5 percent following reports of potential US military action against Iran and increased attacks on tankers in the Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf of Oman.

In response to Iran's maritime activities, the US Treasury Department has launched 'Operation Economic Outcast,' imposing sanctions on 17 vessels and various networks involved in transporting Iranian crude and petrochemicals to Asia. These measures aim to disrupt Iran's shadow fleet and reduce the revenue used for regional military operations.

Maritime security remains a critical concern. Reports indicate a rise in attacks on vessels, including an LPG tanker in the Strait of Hormuz and a vessel near the UAE. Consequently, tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has reached its lowest level in two months, with many operators seeking alternative routes through Saudi Arabia and the UAE. This shift in logistics, combined with regional instability, has contributed to rising diesel and gas prices globally, with the FAO noting that such pressures may eventually impact consumer food prices.
