Oil prices surge as Middle East tensions and tanker attacks drive Brent above $110

Global oil prices surged significantly due to escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and the ongoing war in Ukraine. Brent crude prices breached the $110 per barrel threshold for the first time since May, while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) climbed above $100, reaching approximately $101.41 per barrel.

Market volatility was driven by reports from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) regarding a supertanker carrying over two million barrels of crude catching fire after striking a naval mine in the Strait of Hormuz. Additionally, increased maritime security risks were noted following multiple attacks on commercial vessels in the region. Other contributing factors included Ukrainian drone strikes on Russian energy infrastructure, specifically a Gazprom facility in the Khanty-Mansiysk region, and a notable decline in US crude inventories.

In response to supply concerns, the US Department of Energy issued a call to exchange up to 17 million barrels of crude from its Strategic Petroleum Reserve. Meanwhile, International Energy Agency (IEA) member countries have agreed to accelerate the release of strategic reserves to stabilize the market.
