Stranded humpback whale near Denmark dies, rescue effort criticised
A humpback whale that became stuck near the German island of Poel was later found beached on the Danish island of Anholt. Danish conservation officials reported the animal was dead, and a team including experts from Germany's Institute for Terrestrial and Aquatic Wildlife Research was sent to the site to collect tissue samples and confirm its identity.
Environmental activist and writer Sergio Bambarén, dubbed the "whale whisperer," criticized the rescue operation, saying he felt "something was wrong" when the crew refused to place him on the rescue barge. He alleged errors were made during the whale's release and that the team used language that should never have been spoken. The rescue effort was also hampered by the loss of signals from a transmitter attached to the whale, leaving its status uncertain until the recent death report.
The incident highlights challenges in wildlife rescue coordination across borders, with no video evidence of the release and differing accounts from the parties involved.
