Strength training study: two weekly sessions enough for muscle growth

A large evaluation by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) of 137 reviews covering more than 30,000 participants concluded that two strength‑training sessions per week are sufficient for muscle hypertrophy, provided the weekly volume reaches about 10 sets per muscle group. The analysis emphasizes consistency over high‑intensity frequency, noting that body‑weight and resistance‑band exercises can also meet the required load.

A separate German study found that 90–119 minutes of strength training per week – roughly two to three sessions – was linked to a 13 % lower overall mortality risk, with larger reductions for cardiovascular (19 %), neurological (27 %) and cancer‑related deaths. No additional benefit was observed with higher training volumes, and the greatest health gains occurred when strength work was combined with aerobic exercise.
