Stroke rates among young adults nearly double over three decades
A study published in the journal Neurology reveals that stroke rates among young adults aged 20 to 54 have nearly doubled over the last three decades. Analyzing data from the Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky regions between 1993 and 2020, researchers identified 2,076 first-time stroke cases.
The increase is primarily driven by ischemic strokes, which occur when blood flow to the brain is blocked. While the incidence of strokes in older adults has declined, the trend for younger populations is moving in the opposite direction. Notably, the 30-day mortality rate for young adults following a stroke has decreased from 11.7 percent to 9.4 percent, suggesting improvements in acute medical treatment.
Several traditional risk factors have become more prevalent among this younger demographic. The study noted significant increases in rates of high blood pressure, diabetes, and atrial fibrillation. Most strikingly, documented substance use among young stroke patients rose from 4.6 percent in 1993/94 to 40.2 percent in 2020, with cannabis use cited as a major contributor to this shift.
