Mexico-Guatemala Border 7.4‑Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Region

A powerful earthquake struck off the southern coast of Mexico’s Chiapas state near the Guatemala border on 17 July. USGS reported a magnitude of about 7.4 at a shallow depth of 10‑15 km, though some sources initially listed it as 6.4 at a deeper 86 km. The tremor was felt across southern Mexico, Guatemala and parts of El Salvador, prompting evacuations and a brief tsunami advisory that was later lifted.

Guatemala’s disaster agency, Conred, recorded 75 emergencies, 85 people affected and 79 evacuations. Damage reports include cracks in homes, three severely damaged houses, 26 schools, 22 public buildings and three secondary roads. No major casualties or widespread structural damage have been confirmed in either country, and authorities continue to monitor for aftershocks.
