Tacna region hit by strong winds causing infrastructure and economic damage

Strong winds and gusts, linked by SENAMHI to the Dana Bertha phenomenon, have caused significant damage across the Tacna region in Peru. The weather events, occurring in provinces such as Tacna, Jorge Basadre, and Candarave, have resulted in collapsed roofs, fallen trees, and downed power lines, leading to electricity service interruptions in districts including Sama, Ite, and La Yarada Los Palos.

In the coastal areas of Boca del Río and Planchón, infrastructure damage was reported, including the collapse of light structures and damage to a National Police lifesaving station. The agricultural sector has also been hit; an entrepreneur in Ite reported losses of approximately 130,000 soles after winds destroyed poultry sheds, leaving 7,000 birds vulnerable to the elements.

In response, the National Emergency Operations Center (COEN) and local civil defense brigades are assessing damages to coordinate humanitarian aid. Meanwhile, the Regional Government of Tacna has moved forward with infrastructure projects in Curibaya to improve irrigation systems, a move intended to optimize water resource management in the region.
