Severe wind and dust storm activity in Peru and Bolivia

In late July 2026, strong winds and dust storms, locally known as the Paracas winds, affected the southern coast of Peru. The weather system caused reduced visibility in the Arequipa region and a sandstorm in Pisco with speeds of 42.6 km/h. During this event, a wooden structure on the Punta Colorada bridge in Corire collapsed, striking a resident.

By late August 2026, severe wind gusts continued to impact the region, spreading damage across parts of Peru and Bolivia. In Bolivia, heavy winds caused a stage to collapse during an event in the Oruro department, prompting the National Service of Meteorology and Hydrology (Senamhi) to issue a ‘priority orange alert’ for several departments.

In Peru’s Tacna region, severe winds linked by SENAMHI to the ‘Dana Bertha phenomenon’ caused significant material and agricultural damage. In the provinces of Tacna, Jorge Basadre, and Candarave, gusts destroyed poultry farm infrastructure, specifically in the districts of Ite and Sama, putting approximately 7,000 birds at risk and causing estimated losses of 130,000 soles. Residential areas in Las Vilcas and coastal settlements like Boca del Río and Planchón reported collapsed roofs, destroyed walls, and damage to light structures, including a National Police lifesaving station.

Agricultural losses were reported in corn, chili, and forage crops. Additionally, fallen trees and advertising signs blocked roads, while downed cables caused power outages in districts such as La Yarada Los Palos. The National Emergency Operations Center (COEN), local civil defense brigades, and the Peruvian Army have deployed personnel to assist with debris removal and humanitarian aid coordination.
