Struga, Macedonia Controls Dozens of Small Fires as Water Remains Unsafe for Drinking

On 2 August 2026, Stojanche Angelov, director of Macedonia’s Directorate for Protection and Rescue, said about twenty small open‑space fires were recorded in the municipality of Struga. Most of the blazes have been extinguished, while the remaining ones are under full control and are expected to be put out later in the day. No fire‑engine tractors were required for the operations.

Angelov also addressed the water situation in nearby Gostivar, noting that samples taken by the Institute for Public Health still contain bacteria. Consequently, the water is not yet approved for drinking and is limited to technical use, although hyper‑chlorination treatment is continuing and officials expect it to be declared safe soon.
