Strumyani, Bulgaria, continues flood recovery and water monitoring

Recovery efforts are underway in Strumyani, Bulgaria, following severe flooding caused by torrential rains. The disaster has significantly altered the local landscape, with the riverbed rising to the level of the first houses in some areas. While electricity and water supplies have been restored to most homes, the municipality's state of emergency is expected to be extended.

Environmental Minister Rositsa Karamfilova stated that water quality is under intensive monitoring. Although physical and chemical indicators show no current exceedances, microbiological test results are expected by Tuesday before the water is cleared for drinking and food use. In coordination with the Ministry of Health and the Bulgarian Red Cross, disinfection of the area is planned following these results.

Local authorities are also managing massive amounts of debris. A system has been established to sort waste, including wood and damaged appliances, with the Ministry of Environment organizing free transport for recycling. Mayor Emil Iliev attributed the scale of the disaster to a combination of recent forest fires, intense rainfall, and forestry activities, noting that the region is facing a new climatic reality characterized by extreme temperature fluctuations and sudden, heavy rainfall.
