Student housing shortage hits Halle and Magdeburg
As the winter semester approaches, a significant shortage of affordable student housing is affecting university locations in Halle and Magdeburg. Demand for dormitory spaces is currently outstripping supply.
In Halle, the Studentenwerk reported 852 applications for only 530 available dormitory places, leaving 309 applicants on a waiting list. Monthly rents in Halle range from a minimum of 218 euros to an average of 275 euros. Applicants who are not successful can expect to receive rejections starting September 16.
In Magdeburg, the situation is similarly strained, with 1,220 applications submitted for housing starting October 1. While 61 new rental contracts have been finalized so far, the Studentenwerk notes that available units in Magdeburg and Wernigerode are typically fully occupied. This shortage is a long-standing issue, with international students often facing particular difficulties finding accommodation on the private rental market.
