Student housing shortages increase across German university regions

Student housing shortages are intensifying in several German regions ahead of the winter semester starting in October 2026. In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the Studierendenwerk Rostock-Wismar reports a significant increase in competition for available rooms. The ratio of applicants to available dormitory spaces has risen to approximately 3.4 applicants per room, up from 2.65 in 2022.

Despite recent expansions, including 150 new places completed in April and plans for more in Rostock and Wismar through 2031, the supply remains insufficient. Managing Director Kai Hörig noted that the organization cannot provide housing for all students seeking it.

In Lüneburg, the student union (AStA) has launched a 'bed exchange' to assist first-year students facing high costs and limited availability. The initiative encourages local residents to offer temporary sleeping spaces, such as sofas or guest rooms, to help newcomers settle in during the orientation week from October 1 to 11.
