Studentska lista submits candidate list for Serbian elections

The student movement in Serbia, known as 'Studentska lista – Studenti pobeđuju', has formally submitted its candidate list to the Republic Electoral Commission for the extraordinary parliamentary elections scheduled for October 25. The list features 250 candidates, including university professors, doctors, artists, and activists. Notably, medical professor and cardiologist Ilija Srdanović is the first candidate on the list.

The movement, which emerged from nearly two years of anti-government protests, reported collecting over 70,000 signatures of support. Citizens across Serbia, including in Belgrade, Novi Sad, and Valjevo, participated in large-scale signature drives, sometimes waiting hours in line. The protests were originally triggered by the November 2024 train station tragedy in Novi Sad, which resulted in 16 deaths and led to allegations of corruption regarding infrastructure renovations.

University of Belgrade Rector Vladan Đokić stated that the institution has faced attacks on its autonomy for two years. Meanwhile, President Aleksandar Vučić has criticized the student list, describing it as nameless and lacking a program. The upcoming election is viewed as a significant test for the current administration, as the student movement seeks to transition from street protests to formal political participation.
