Studies examine impact of childhood screen time on development

Recent longitudinal studies have provided differing perspectives on the impact of childhood screen time on cognitive and academic development.

Research from the Universities of Jyväskylä and Eastern Finland, part of the PANIC project, suggests that higher screen exposure during childhood may be associated with improved cognitive processing in adolescence. The study, which followed 260 participants over eight years, found that adolescents with more childhood screen time showed better reaction times, higher memory accuracy, and superior cognitive processing. Researchers noted that these benefits appear linked to active consumption, such as digital reading, computer-based homework, or video games, rather than passive viewing. The study also noted that physical activity interacted with screen use differently across genders, with light exercise benefiting memory in girls and structured sports benefiting boys.

Conversely, a study published in the World Journal of Pediatrics by researchers from the National University of Singapore suggests that excessive screen time during specific developmental stages may lead to poorer academic results. Following 502 children, the research identified that high exposure during the first year of life and around age six—when formal schooling begins—was most strongly associated with lower academic performance and reduced working memory. The researchers hypothesize that very early exposure may displace critical developmental interactions and activities.
