Studsvik selects GE Vernova Hitachi and Samsung for Swedish SMR project

Studsvik has entered into an agreement with GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy and Samsung C&T to develop a small modular reactor (SMR) project in Sweden. The ReFirm nuclear programme aims to deploy four BWRX-300 units, providing a combined capacity of 1.2 GW.

The project is planned for either Studsvik’s existing nuclear site in Nyköping or the Målma site in Valdemarsvik. Under the agreement, the partners will begin joint development work covering commercial, technical, regulatory, and financing activities. Studsvik will lead permitting, environmental impact assessments, and community engagement, while GE Vernova Hitachi will lead reactor design and licensing support. Samsung C&T and GE Vernova Hitachi will act as the execution team for design and construction.

South Korean firm DS Investment Partners will lead the investment, with GE Vernova Financial Services providing advisory and financial structuring support. The first reactor is estimated to be in operation by the mid-2030s. This agreement marks a strategic phase in development but does not constitute a final investment decision or a permit to construct.
