Study estimates Temu and Shein cost German retail billions, with more than 40,000 jobs at risk
A study commissioned by the German Retail Association finds that Temu and Shein are imposing a substantial burden on Germany's retail sector. The analysis estimates annual lost sales of about €2.5 billion. The researchers warn that consumer shifts toward these Asian online platforms could translate into significant economic costs for brick-and-mortar retailers.
The same assessment projects that more than 40,000 jobs could be affected as a result of reduced sales in traditional outlets. A separate calculation by researchers reinforces the view that Temu and Shein are generating a sizable impact on Germany’s economy. The articles note that Temu and Shein are Asian online retailers driving consumer purchases that may be eroding domestic retail activity.
