US Study Finds 4 in 5 Toddler Foods Ultra-Processed
Researchers from the University of Texas at Austin examined 2,783 packaged foods marketed for children aged 6‑36 months in 21 grocery stores in Austin, Texas. Using the NOVA classification, 81 % of the products were classified as ultra‑processed, and 49 % failed to meet at least one World Health Organization nutrient benchmark for toddlers. Specific excesses included 17 % of products surpassing WHO sugar limits, 25 % exceeding sodium recommendations, 11 % containing too much fat, and 12 % above calorie guidelines. The study excluded infant formula, beverages and purees. Findings were presented at the Nutrition 2026 conference of the American Society for Nutrition in July and come as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration considers new front‑of‑package nutrition rules for foods aimed at children. Researchers urged parents to scrutinize ingredient lists and nutrition facts because many toddler foods do not meet basic health standards.
