Study Finds New Plastic Kettles Release Billions of Microplastic Particles

Researchers from the University of Queensland examined eight polypropylene electric kettles. In the first boil, one kettle released almost 12 million nanoplastic particles per millilitre of water, equivalent to about three billion particles in a typical cup of tea. The study measured both nanoplastics and larger microplastic fragments over successive boiling cycles.

The amount of plastic released fell when hard, mineral‑rich tap water was used, as mineral deposits formed on the kettle walls and limited plastic leaching. Repeated boiling and discarding of water also reduced emissions: after roughly ten boil‑and‑pour cycles the particle count dropped sharply, and after fifty cycles it remained low but still detectable. Even after 150 cycles, researchers recorded about 820 thousand nanoplastics per millilitre.

The authors call for clearer labeling and user instructions, urging manufacturers to advise consumers to boil and discard water several times before first use. While the health effects of the released doses are not yet quantified, earlier studies have linked microplastic ingestion to gastrointestinal, pulmonary and neurodegenerative concerns.
