Study Finds North Atlantic “Cold Blob” Signals Weakening of Major Ocean Current
Researchers at Germany’s Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research have identified a persistent cooling area in the southern North Atlantic near Greenland, dubbed the “Cold Blob.” Published in Geophysical Research Letters, the analysis links the cooling to a reduction in heat transport by the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), a key component of global climate regulation.
The team warns that a continued weakening of the AMOC could push the system toward a tipping point, potentially causing faster sea‑level rise along the U.S. East Coast, stronger Atlantic hurricanes, and unusually cold European winters. Historical analogues such as the Younger‑Dryas period suggest that recovery from such a slowdown can take decades to centuries. Scientists urge policymakers to consider the early‑warning signals as the ocean circulation approaches a critical threshold.
