Study finds yellow pea alternatives improve wheat-related digestive issues

A study conducted by ZENB JAPAN and Fujita Health University has found that replacing wheat-based foods with yellow pea-derived alternatives can alleviate symptoms of Non-Celiac Gluten Sensitivity (NCGS).

The research, published in the ‘European Journal of Nutrition’, involved 30 healthy adults who consumed wheat products frequently. Over a four-week period, participants replaced wheat with products made from yellow peas, such as pasta, bread, and crackers. Among the 15 participants who initially reported abdominal discomfort, approximately 80% of those who saw a significant reduction in bloating experienced improvements in other symptoms, including abdominal pain, discomfort, and irregular bowel movements.

Beyond physical symptoms, the study noted improvements in several Quality of Life (QOL) metrics, including mental health and social functioning. Researchers also observed changes in gut microbiota and cytokines related to inflammation and immunity. The study emphasizes that when reducing wheat intake, the nutritional content of the replacement food is critical, as yellow peas offer higher fiber and lower sugar content compared to wheat.
